Car Accident FAQs

1.   What should I do before leaving the accident scene?

Always insist on obtaining full identification from all other persons involved in the accident, including complete insurance information. You should politely ask to see any insurance cards so you can copy the name of the company and policy number. Don't rely on what another motorist tells you about insurance.

2.   I felt okay at the accident scene, so I didn't ask for medical help, but now I'm really hurting. Is it too late to go to the hospital?

This is in fact quite normal. Immediately after an unexpected and traumatic event like a car crash, your adrenalin is elevated and masks any pain. Usually within hours, the adrenalin level returns to normal, and the true effects of your injuries take over. You should go to your doctor or the nearest emergency room right away.

3.   I'm worried about missing work because of my injuries. What should I do?

Unless you think your job would truly be in jeopardy if you miss work, you should discuss this with your doctor. Car accident injuries typically involve muscle and ligament strains. Even in a non-physically demanding job, you can prolong your recovery period by trying to "work through" your injuries. If you have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance as most people do, you can get benefits to cover wage loss.

4.   I'm running up a lot of medical bills, and I'm afraid of getting stuck with them if there's not enough insurance on the car that hit me. Should I be concerned?

Check the declaration page of your insurance policy. If you bought more than the minimum coverage for "UM/UIM", your own policy will cover you in case the at-fault driver was not insured or had lower benefits than you do.
